Product Design & Realization

The Product Design and Realization Laboratory specializes in designing products and process such as axiomatic design, adaptable design for design reuse, robust design and design of adaptable interfaces. The researcher have designed an adaptable vehicle model and built some of the components with the rapid prototyping machine.

Physical products can be designed and realized in the lab with 2 different FDM machines that use polymer materials such as ABS and polycarbonates to build 3D prototypes using layer based technology. Specific research projects include: establishment of models for characterization of mechanical behaviour of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) processes and parts; modeling of the accuracy of FDM processes for precision applications and development of new materials.

Research is progressing in the rapid prototyping area using multiple materials, including metals, ceramics and polymers, and multiple sources in order to realize components with functionally graded composition and locally controlled properties. The application of these innovative techniques in rapid design and fabrication add a high value especially in the manufacturing processes
